Ariana DeBose Joins Sony’s Spider-Man Universe Movie Kraven The Hunter – Report
Actress Ariana DeBose (Hamilton, West Side Story) is the latest addition to Marvel’s Kraven the Hunter cast. The Deadline was the first to report it, and citing unnamed sources indicates that DeBose will play Calypso in the universe of Sony’s Spider-Man movie villain. In the comics, Ezili is a Haitian-born voodoo priestess and Kraven’s one-time love interest, who also seemed to enjoy driving him into fits of rage and fueling his hatred of Spider-Man. Debose’s casting news follows a similar recent report from the same outlet that Fred Hechinger, who recently had a memorable twist as a screen addict turned rafting enthusiast on the HBO series White Lotus, will reportedly play Chameleon.
The film, titled Kraven the Hunter, is currently set to hit theaters on January 13, 2023. The once rumored movie is one of many Spider-Man characters getting their own big screen treatment in Sony Pictures‘ growing universe of Marvel characters. Other films in the growing universe include Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and the highly anticipated Jared Leto-starring Morbius (now due April 1, 2022). A Madame Web movie, or perhaps a TV series, is also currently in development – actress Dakota Johnson (Peanut Falcon, The Social Network) is being considered for the lead role.
Kraven the Hunter, born Sergei Kravinoff, is a big game hunter who is obsessed with Spider-Man. The character’s most iconic story is 1987’s “Kraven’s Last Hunt,” in which he “killed” and buried Spider-Man and then impersonated the web for two weeks to prove he was a better hero. The story ended with Kraven leaving photographic proof that he was Spider-Man as a suicide note to the police.
