Batman movies in order of how to watch them the right way

Over the past 60 years, 12 films have been released starring Batman. Of course, with the newest film in the series just released, it’s important to get to know the character’s cinematic history and freshen up on the adventures of the Caped Crusader. But with so many Batmans, Robins, and villains, it can get dizzy trying to figure out what order to watch all these movies in. To help you, we’ve put together a few different viewing orders for you to consider.

For our purposes, Justice League (2016) will be replaced by Justice League Zack Snyder (because it’s much better and more interesting) as well as Batman: Mask of the Phantasm as well as Lego Batman Movie will also be included with all of the Batman live-action films as they had a wide theatrical release.

All latest films from Batman Begins can be broadcast to HBO Max, as well as animated credits (for fans of animated Batman movies, check out this list of our favorites). However, for something older, you will have to go to Hulu to broadcast them, and Batman (1966) may be leased but no subscription.

Release order

It’s pretty straightforward. This is the literal order in which these films were released.

  • Batman (1966)
  • Batman (1989)
  • Batman Returns
  • Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
  • Batman forever
  • Batman and Robin
  • Batman Begins
  • The Dark Knight
  • Rise of the dark knight
  • Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
  • Lego Batman Movie
  • Zack Snyder “Justice League”
  • Batman

Batman in the Multiverse of Madness

Batman films have always had a habit of telling very similar stories with the same characters. That is the purpose of this watch order. This lets you experience all the different villains and storylines of Batman movies over the last 60 years to see how characters like the Joker, Catwoman, and Penguin have evolved, as well as different versions of the Caped Crusader. Ironically, the most compelling through-line in this viewing order may be Robin’s storyline in the last half of the list, culminating in Justice League Zack Snyder.

  • Batman Begins – Origin story
  • Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (stop right after Bruce Wayne origin story) – Origin Story
  • Batman (1989) – Origin story introduced / Prankster
  • Batman: Mask of the Phantasm – Early Batman and Joker stuff
  • The Dark Knight – The Joker introduced Batman early and mid-career.
  • Batman – Batman, Catwoman, and Penguin at the beginning and middle of their careers.
  • Batman Returns Mid-career of Batman, Catwoman, and Penguin.
  • Rise of the dark knight – Introduced Batman, Catwoman, Bane, and Robin at the end of their careers.
  • Batman forever – Mid-career Batman, Robin introduced
  • Batman (1966) – Lots of villains, lots of Robin, pretty much everything set.
  • Batman & Robin – Batman, Bane & Robin mid-career
  • Lego Batman Movie – The biggest bat family movie ever
  • Justice League Zack Snyder – Batman’s career is over, Robin is dead, Bruce is being pursued.

Batman, but you watched the movie a little better each time

The Batman movies are, frankly, mostly good. Your level of enjoyment of the extremes of the series may vary, such as camp-filled Batman and Robin or deadly serious Justice League Zack Snyder, but overall they are pretty good. With that said, this order allows you to watch them from worst to best, in our estimation.

  • Batman and Robin
  • Batman forever
  • Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
  • Rise of the dark knight
  • Batman (1966)
  • Justice League Zack Snyder
  • The Lego Batman Movie
  • Batman
  • Batman (1989)
  • Batman Returns
  • The Dark Knight
  • Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
  • Batman Begins
