#Bendergate is over: Futurama will be returning with John DiMaggio
Futurama seems to never die. Like his protagonist, the 20th-century human Fry, he simply freezes for years and years only to thaw out in an older and unfamiliar world. Last month, the beloved animated series was ready for a streaming revival on Hulu, with 20 new episodes ordered, reuniting most of the original cast; the second such revival since the show’s original run from 1999-2003 was revived in 2007-2013. Unfortunately, one big thing was missing: voice actor John DiMaggio, who played the fan-favorite robot Bender.
After a month of speculation, what fans have dubbed “#Bendergate” has come to an end – DiMaggio is back, and Futurama as fans know, he will be back again soon.
“#Bendergate is officially over,” DiMaggio said in a statement, “so put it on the back of the shelf behind the Christmas decorations, or maybe in that kitchen drawer with all the other crap you put in there like old unusable crazy glue, or maybe even put it in a jar, in which you store gases. Whatever floats in your boat, I don’t care, you understand. I’M BACK, BABY! BITE MY BRIGHT METAL ASS!”
DiMaggio had previously said he did not join the show at the time of its announcement out of “self-respect” as salary negotiations were still ongoing. At the time, the actor said that the animation industry was “using the time and talent of artists,” saying that he believed that both he and his fellow cast members deserved more pay.
DiMaggio’s new statement says nothing about these initial complaints or how they were handled.
New episodes of Futurama are expected to debut on Hulu in 2023.
