Elden Ring: How To Beat Commander O’Neil
Of all the boss fights in Elden Ring, the fight with Commander O’Neill is one of the easiest. That being said, if you don’t approach this burly soldier carefully, he can easily kill you with one shot, as if he were Radhan. However, as part of Millicent’s questline, which has some pretty sweet rewards on its own, you’ll want to remove this optional boss. Here’s where you can find Commander O’Neill and how to defeat him. If you’re just starting out in Elden Ring and don’t even know who Millicent is, check out our guides on what you should do first in Elden Ring and where you can easily farm runes early in the game.
In the Scarlet Swamp
If you’re not a fan of the poison swamps found throughout the Souls series, I have some bad news for you about where O’Neil is. It’s right in the middle of the Aeonian Swamp, in a place called the Heart of Aeonia.
Just getting to O’Neill is half the battle. Most likely, you will first approach the swamp from its western side, far from the Heart of Eonia. Don’t drive straight through the swamp to the boss fight. You will eventually be invaded by Millicent, who will most likely push you into the swamp itself and kill you soon after. Instead of, go around the swamp from the north side and search Sellia under the stairs place of grace. From there you can travel southwest to a place of grace north of the Heart of Eonia called Inner Aeonia.
From here, head southwest around the Heart of Eonia. Eventually you will find a small piece of land with a Marika stake and a picture of a summoning pond. From here, you’ll want to face the boss fight, as you can easily summon other players (although it’s not the best choice) and run back if you die.
Jump on the torrent
Once you start the boss fight, things get pretty easy. O’Neill starts by calling four headless soldiers, each using crossbows. Jump on the torrent immediately and take out these small enemies while dodging O’Neill’s attacks. He is quite slow, so luring him to the other side of the arena and then running up to attack his minions is a viable option.
However, be sure to kill these enemies quickly because O’Neil can buff them. It can boost both their attack and defense, allowing you to get carried away killing them and get yourself in the dirt.
Once O’Neill’s soldiers are wiped out, aim for the big man himself. His attacks have decent range but are easy to avoid if you don’t get greedy. Hit and run tactics are best if you are using a melee build against the boss. On the other hand, if you use magic or ranged. You can just keep your distance and drain his health without any problem.
There are only two attacks that everyone should watch out for when fighting Commander O’Neill. The first one makes him spin his weapon in large circles, causing the wind circles to swirl around. He rotates his weapon several times before a large circle of Scarlet Rot covers the area, instantly infecting everyone inside. If you end up under this attack, it’s almost guaranteed death. Once you see him preparing this attack, just run away and you will be safe.
O’Neil’s other attack activates when he reaches 40% of his maximum health. He will summon three Headless Axemen, each of which can also be upgraded in the same way as his original group of soldiers. Like that other group get the axemen out as quickly as possible. And go back to focusing on O’Neal with a hit and run tactic. After defeating O’Neill’s Axemen, it shouldn’t be a problem.
