Elden Ring launch issues: fix these common problems

The ancient ring has finally arrived, and as we hoped, it feels a lot like Big Dark Souls. As it turns out, emulating Dark Souls also involves emulating some of the usual PC port goofiness that has been in Souls games in the past. Players are reporting issues with gamepads, frame rates and Easy Anti-Cheat on their first day of playing Elden Ring. Don’t despair, Stained One. There are already fixes for some of the issues you may have encountered. Here are the most common Elden Ring startup issues we’ve seen so far and how to fix them.

Elden Ring frame rate stutters

Prior to launch, we ran into some pretty serious frame stuttering issues with Elden Ring. We noticed that the frame rate dropped by half compared to a normal game and in the worst cases down to 0 fps. The Elden Ring Day 1 patch fixed some of these issues but frame drops persist even on systems that shouldn’t have any problems launching the game. The problems with compiling DirectX 12 shaders are again striking.

What to do: There is currently no direct solution. Look in the main menu of Elden RIng and make sure you have version 1.02 or later and also make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card installed. FromSoftware is working on additional fixes to resolve this issue. You can also follow our Elden Ring setup guide to get the most out of your PC’s power.

Elden Ring controller not working

Many PC players are reporting issues with Elden Ring not recognizing their controller even though the computer recognizes it. We’ve had mixed results among the PC Gamer staff but if possible, avoid pressing Alt+Tab outside of Elden Ring, as this seems to have caused us problems.

What to do: The solution that worked for us was to remove Vjoy, the virtual joystick program from our Windows applications. Installed Vjoy seems to be the usual culprit. You can also try these other Elden Ring controller fixes, including checking your Steam controller settings to enable “Xbox Configuration Support” or “Generic Gamepad Configuration Support”.

Elden Ring performance issues

In addition to frame rate issues, players experience other performance issues such as crashes and screen tearing. A fair number of players are having issues that were found to be “mixed” in user reviews on Elden Ring’s launch day on Steam. FromSoftware has stated that it will work on additional performance fixes.

“We will constantly work to improve the game so that it can be played comfortably in various computer environments and on various platforms. For the PC version, updating your graphics card drivers to the latest version can greatly improve performance.”

What to do: Pending new official fixes, make sure your graphics drivers are up to date as recommended by FromSoftware. You can also follow our guide on how to fix screen tearing in Elden Ring with Vsync settings.

Elden Ring “Network Status Check Failed

If you see the message “Network Status Check Failed”, it means that you were unable to connect to the Elden Ring online services. On launch weekends, you may experience this issue as many people are rushing to play and the servers are full. The bad news is that you didn’t do anything wrong and there is no other way on your part to fix it than patience. The good news is that the player reports I’ve looked at so far have been from console players, not PC players.

What to do: Go to the main menu and select the offline game. Unfortunately, this of course means that you won’t be able to collaborate with friends or challenge other players. Hold on tight, stained one!

Elden Ring Easy Anti-Cheat won’t start

On PC, Elden Ring uses the Easy Anti-Cheat system to prevent online scams and hacks. Unfortunately, some players are getting frustrated with Elden Ring even before any brute invaders can show up in their games. If Elden Ring won’t launch when the EAC logo is displayed, this is most likely the problem you’re experiencing.

What to do: Bandai Namco says it is aware of the issue and will “provide a fix in the near future.” Meanwhile, our colleagues at Windows Central have outlined a way to disable EAC which will mean that you will have to play offline but you will be able to launch the game.
