Elden Ring Rune Farming: The Best Early Areas To Level Up Fast

At the start of FromSoftware’s latest game, Elden Ring, you might feel a little weak. While this feeling is an intentional part of the game, there are several ways to farm yourself some early runes and get a few extra levels faster than usual. You need to complete a few essential tasks first in Elden Ring, such as getting to the Gate front Site of Grace, where you will get the Ghost Horse Torrent and the ability to level up with runes. From here, you can head to a few different farming spots, depending on how confident you are with your skills.

Beastshrine Farming – 1000 to 1300 runes per enemy.

First, you will need to go to the Third Church of Marika.
  • The best place to farm in the early game is a higher-level spot where you can find your way to using the warp gate. To get there, you will need to find your way to the Third Church of Marika, located in East Limgrave. The easiest way to get here is to start at the Place of Grace in front of the gate and follow the road to the east. Once you’ve crossed the bridge, you’ll take the road north and keep following it until you come across the church directly. This location is outside the first map fragment you find, but you can get the map fragment for Limgrave East by continuing along the path after the Third Church of Marika.
Once you get to the Third Church of Marika, you will need to go inside, activate “Lost Grace,” and take the “Wonderful Physicist’s Flask” since you’re already there. Head to the river on the north side of the church and follow it east until you find a warp gate behind some trees. This warp gate will lead you to the Beastshrine.
After you pass through the warp gate, you will spawn there with the Grace Site behind you.

Once you reach the Beast Sanctuary, a tall enemy will be standing right in front of you. This is a boss you’ll want to fight much later in the game, but luckily, if you don’t attack or get close to him, he’ll leave you alone. The first thing you need to do is turn around and head to the Sanctuary, where you’ll find the Place of Grace and Gurranka, the Priest Beast you don’t need to worry about right now. After that, go outside and start looking for small enemies in black hoods standing around. These enemies will be pretty intense for someone at a low level, but they don’t have too much health. They are also mostly stand-alone, so you can sneak up on them for a critical hit.

You'll find around two dozen of these enemies spread across the various zones noted above.

Depending on which weapon the enemy is using, each one will net you between 1000 and 1300 runes, which is a significant amount early in the game. This area is also good because if you get killed by one of them, you can quickly drive through the Torrent, catch your runes and wait it out. Having a Site of Grace in the Sanctuary also means you can quickly drop enemies. There are a few other places to check out if this area proves too difficult.

Fort Faroth Dragon – 3500 runes per enemy or 80,000 runes once

All dragons are in the indicated area, small dragons are on the west side.

All dragons are in the indicated area, small dragons are on the west side.

This next method offers players the chance to get 80,000 Runes easily if they are willing to take a little trip. Players will want to head to the eastern area of the map, Calydus. Players can find this area by following the dirt road northeast of Limgrave. The fort is located in the northern middle part of Calida. The Place of Grace is right outside the fort along with your target; a massive sleeping dragon.

You will stand here and mourn the dragon until it eventually dies.
You will stand here and mourn the dragon until it eventually dies.

If you get close to the dragon’s back from the Place of Grace, you can stand next to it and continuously attack it without it attacking you or any other enemy attacking you. Depending on your level and your weapons, this process will take a long time. If you have a weapon that causes blood loss, use it to speed up the process. Once the dragon is defeated, it will die along with the lesser dragons that are on the other side of it, earning you a cool 80,000 Runes. Once a dragon is killed, it will not respawn like smaller dragons.

If you don’t kill the big dragon, then the smaller dragons can be farmed for 3500 runes each, and there will be five or six of them. As long as the big dragon is alive, the smaller dragons will spawn whenever you enter the Place of Grace. The downside here is that for early players these little dragons will be pretty hard to kill even if they spawn with half a health bar. This farming method is best used later in the game, so it’s up to you if you want to get the 80,000 Rune bonus earlier or wait to farm this area later.

Northern Viking Camp on Lake Agil – 2000 runes per passage.

The Viking camp is located in the red circle, between it and the Place of Grace there are several enemies on horseback.
The Viking camp is located in the red circle, between it and the Place of Grace there are several enemies on horseback.

To the east of the ruins in front of the gate, you will find the northern place of grace at Aghil Lake. To the northeast of it, there is a small Viking camp with a few enemies on horseback between the camp and the Place of Grace. Each enemy on a horse will net you around 300 runes, and clearing the entire camp of wolves and Vikings will net you around 2000 runes per run. The only enemies that are a bit difficult to defeat are those on horseback, but a couple of heavy jumping attacks knock them off their horses and leave them open for a critical hit. Unfortunately, this method won’t give you runes as fast as the aforementioned dragons, but it will be much easier to do so without dying. The last method gives the least number of runes, but it is simple and fast.

Seaside Ruins – 577 runes per playthrough.

A crowd of knights and goblins is located in the east, within the specified area.
A crowd of knights and goblins is located in the east, within the specified area.

The Place of Grace in the Seaside Ruins is located southeast of where the player first enters the Interearth. From this place of grace, players will head east to find a group of knights fighting a group of goblins. Destroying the entire group will earn players 577 runes, which is quite a bit. The advantage of this method is that the enemies are distracted by killing each other, so it’s easy to run up and start killing them before they start focusing on you. You gain runes whenever an enemy dies nearby, even if another enemy kills them. The Grace Site is nearby, so it only takes 2-3 minutes to run. This is not the most efficient method, but the safest. Regardless of which method you choose, gaining extra levels and stat points at the start of Elden Ring will come in handy, especially when trying to defeat the game’s first main boss, Margit The Fell Omen.
