Elden Ring Speedrunners Declare ‘RIP Speedruns’ After Latest Patch
Elden Ring’s speedruns appear to have been completely changed after the new 1.0.3 patch nerfed several items key to the current record time. That current world record The owner of Distortion2 tweeted (below) “RIP Elden Ring speedruns” in response to the Hoarfrost Stomp (previously potent ice spell) power down. Elden Ring’s first significant update made several changes in favor of specific playstyles, such as increased duration of buffs and easier weapon upgrades. Still, Icerind Hatchet and Mimic Tear’s other spiritual ashes nerfs will make specific approaches more complex, including speedrunning.Rip Elden Ring Speedruns pic.twitter.com/cHzI91yEBX— Distortion2 🕐 Elden Ring (@Distortion_2) March 17, 2022
Distortion2 isn’t the only one expressing dismay over the new patch, as Elden Ring streamer Elajjaz. Who is currently trying to complete the game with all the memories (main bosses) as quickly as possible, tweeted, “Miyazaki? What have you done to my boy? RIP all high-speed races of Memories at the moment. It’s time to come up with a brand new route.”Popular Elden Ring YouTuber Syrobe also spoke about the changes to the video. While the Hoarfrost Stomp nerf was “necessary” and would improve PVP, it would “hurt speedrunners.”
He said, “Hello to all the speedrunners running under 30 (minutes). Unfortunately, this may change a bit now.”
Distortion2 holds the current world speed record, at 28 minutes and 41 seconds. It has continued to cut its time by seconds since the game launched on February 25th.
However, the speedrun strategy seems to need to change as the power of these critical items has now been reduced. That’s not to say it will never break again. The speedrunner community regularly develops new strategies and tricks to complete games in speedy time.
For example, in one of FromSoftware’s earlier games, Dark Souls set a world speed record last year (21 minutes 17 seconds). However, the game was released over a decade ago, in 2011.
The Elden Ring strategy
The Elden Ring strategy that used this now-diluted weapon won’t be the last wildly complex method players use to beat the game in record time. In our 10/10 review, IGN said, “Elden Ring is a massive iteration of what FromSoftware started with the Souls series. It brings challenging combat into an incredible open world that gives us the freedom to choose our path.”
