Elden Ring’s Torrent is the ultimate horse companion

Ancient Ring, the open world is huge and full of details. It takes time and patience to walk from one Place of Grace to another on foot. Luckily, with Torrent, the summoning of the horse, the world is completely manageable. The noble horse does ancient ring both more and less dangerous, all to increase freedom, exploration, and tomfoolery. Jumping on the Torrent means to know peace, at least for a while; you can go to what seemed like an unreachable place, only to be killed by the many higher-level enemies you find there. It’s incredible.

Torrent has made the FromSoftware game more accessible to beginners like me. The controls are intuitive, the movement is as responsive as when I normally control my character, and there are easy ways to speed up or dismount. I can ride and kite like a little freak. I feel safer attacking the big guys because I know that if things don’t work out, I can often get on my horse and run away. (I even outran you, Tree Sentinel.) I can also move quickly through dense enemy areas to get to other parts of the map. Each escape, just at the very last moment, causes a little thrill.

Repeatedly dying at the feet of the enemy no longer feels like a failure. The torrent can get me where I need to go, and the open world is full of (terrifying) wonders. Instead, every battle feels like a choice, and I decided to stick with it. If I go out of Torrent to do some shit, then I commit. Knowing how to fight is not a commitment but a specific decision to improve a skill or try out a tactic. These experiments contribute to the improvement; pleasant appearance of all my idleness.

And Torrent totally helped me with the lowest impulses and the most chaotic dreams. I’m glad for any creature that comes close – just to see what happens. I can run fast enough to avoid death; I can be forgotten. The latter is fine because these deaths are almost always funny. And I don’t mind losing runes; I can always farm them if needed.

Also, thanks to Torrent’s steady gait, it doesn’t take me long to get anywhere. The Torrent is so fast that I often find myself in unfamiliar regions filled with enemies who immediately pounce on me. Each replay is a chance to find another cave, passage, or hideout. There’s also the Torrent’s Double Jump, the real secret sauce of exploration – great for climbing rocks or making your way inside.

Every time “You are dead” appears on my screen, I don’t suffer. But if Torrent is killed, I am very sad. I have no plans other than recklessness and exploration and the desire to fight anyone that gets in my way. By the time the first boss and I finally meet, maybe they will have reason to be afraid of me? Probably no. But a girl and her horse can dream.
