FDA Expands Recall of Abbott Baby Formula

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration extended a recall of Abbott infant formula after a second child developed a bacterial infection and died after consuming the formula. The latest recall is for Similac PM 60/40, a specialty formula for infants requiring reduced mineral intake, the FDA said on Monday news release. It is made at the same plant in Sturgis, Michigan, where the other recalled formulas were made, according to the FDA.

In the latter case, a child who used the mixture Similac PM 60/40 became infected CronobacteriaSakasaki and died, the FDA said, noting that the infection “may have been one of the causes of death for this patient.” Details about the place and date of death have not been released.

“Currently, Similac PM 60/40 lot code 27032K80 (can) / 27032K800 (case) is the only type and many of this special formula is being recalled,” the FDA said in a statement.

“This case is under investigation and the cause is currently Cronobacteria Sacosakia infection has not been identified,” Abbott said on his Web site. “We want to express our sincere condolences to the family.”

Abbott said none of the products distributed have tested positive for the virus. Cronobacteria Sacosakia and recently tested samples of Similac PM 60/40 from the lot numbers indicated have tested negative for bacteria.

In the latter case, a total of five babies are known to have fallen ill and two have died after drinking the Abbott formula.

In mid-February, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said parents should stop using the three powdered baby formulas – Similac, Alimentum, and EleCare – that were made in the Sturgis factory that was associated with reports of bacterial infections in babies.

For an early recall, the FDA formula must not be used if all three conditions are met: the first two digits of the product code are between 22 and 37; the code on the container contains K8, SH, or Z2; and the expiration date is April 1, 2022, or later.

To find out if your formula has been retracted, follow the link Web site and enter the product code on the bottom of the package.
