How to craft your dream weapon in Destiny 2’s The Witch Queen

Weapon crafting has always been close to the top of the Destiny 2 community’s wishlist, and with the release of the Witch Queen expansion, Bungie has finally done it. Guardians can now forge weapons to their exact specifications without relying on the fickle hand of a random number generator to bless them with the perfect perk roll.

In this video and article, I will give you a crash course in crafting. You’ll learn how to get the weapon samples you need to get started, the materials you need, and where to find them. In the video, I also show some killer perk combinations for the best weapons. Creating the perfect monster slayer has three steps, so let’s get started.

  1. Fixing the weapon pattern

First, it’s important to note that not every weapon in the game can be crafted. There are currently 29 craftable weapons included, although Bungie plans to add more. While it is possible to unlock multiple templates by completing certain quests, weapon templates are primarily unlocked with “Resonant” weapons, which you can easily spot thanks to the red borders around their icons.

About this content

To launch The Witch Queen, we partnered with Bungie to create a series of guides and tutorial videos. They are being created by some of Destiny 2’s most renowned creators and content experts. This particular piece comes fromĀ Cool guy, whose game channel specializes in analyzing weapons and perks to help you become a better player. For full disclosure, everything published under this program will include this panel.

Each of the 29 weapons that can be crafted has two versions: regular and resonant with a red border. (As a reminder, non-craftable weapons can also drop as Resonant.) You will need to “customize” the Resonant versions by making kills and performing actions with the equipped weapon before you can unlock the appropriate template to create that particular weapon.

Some resonant weapons drop from certain activities in the playlist, while others can be found randomly in the open world. They can also be obtained from the Vendor Rank Up Pack, Raids and Dungeons, and Dares of Eternity Keys. In short, just play the game, and soon you will be swimming in resonant cannons.

Each weapon that can be crafted requires passing a pattern to unlock it for crafting. To see the requirements, go to the Triumphs section in the main menu, and on the right, you will find the Templates and Catalysts tab. All weapons available for Shape (i.e., crafting) are listed here. Hover your mouse over the desired weapon to learn more about its promotion requirements.

While some templates, such as the Empirical Evidence sidearm, only require you to set up one resonance drop, others, such as the Sharp Investigation Scout Rifle, may require up to three. And it looks like it will take as many as five settings to unlock a raid weapon.

I have no idea why the crafting menu doesn’t have a pattern unlock requirement. Instead, you need to go to the Templates and Catalysts tab in the Triumphs menu. Byzantine! (Image credit: Bungie)

  1. The Shape of your weapon

Once you unlock your chosen template, it will be simple for you to create a base version and then use it in the wild to level it up. Again, this includes killing and taking action. As you level up, you’ll unlock more shape options, including barrels, magazines, and improved interior features. Every time you change the Shape of a weapon and replace a new perk, it will require crafting materials to complete. Various mats are involved, the most basic of which is Resonant Alloy, which is earned whenever you dismantle a legendary weapon. Here are other t

Expand the image above to see a list of all crafting materials. Most of them stack up to 250, with the exception of Ascendant Alloy, which is much rarer than the others. (Image credit: Bungie)

Ascendent Alloy is the rarest material, and unfortunately, you will need it every time you want to add an upgraded perk to a weapon. It can be obtained by completing the Weekly Campaign Quest and the Throneworld Spring quest on Master difficulty. You can also buy one per week at the Tower from Master Rahul. Finally, another one can be obtained when you rank up the gunsmith (but this will be the most onerous method).

Other elements – Destructive, Agile, Volatile, Energetic, and Drowned – are associated with specific perk styles. For example, you will need energy cells to upgrade and unlock any ammo or reload-related features.

Once the resonant weapon is fully configured, you will be able to extract its materials. When extracting, you usually have two items to choose from. Pick an item that matches the perk you’re trying to create, or just pick what you have the least of right now. Most legendary items only stack up to 250, so you’ll find yourself filling up fairly quickly.

The Pointed Inquiry Recon Rifle is surprisingly comfortable for the 150 RPM archetype. It will be even better if you opt for the new Stats for All perk, which grants multiple buffs when hitting three separate targets. Also, look out for Focused Fury, which increases damage when you hit half the magazine as precision shots. (Image credit: Bungie)

  1. Reshape and upgrade your God Roll weapon

Craftable weapons are designed to be reshaped and upgraded so you can choose the version that best suits your playstyle. You can also consider crafting weapons for a specific job, such as high DPS against a boss in a limited time. Perhaps after some time playing with the gun, you will realize that it is a bit slow. No problem, figure out what materials you need to add a handling perk, then go back to the relic on Mars and reshape.

Each weapon swatch offers perks that cater to different playstyles. It is up to you to decide how to shape the pattern as you wish.

Whether you’re a new player or a longtime player, you’ll soon find out which weapon suits you best. Maybe you’re more of a support player who likes to jump from a distance, or maybe you like to build in a lot of uptime, or maybe it’s all about max DPS. Each weapon pattern offers bonuses that suit different play styles. It is up to you to decide how to shape the pattern as you wish. This marks the first time that Destiny 2 players have been able to manually select perks from all of the abilities of a particular weapon. Combine that freedom with the time you’re going to spend pre-pumping weapons, and these homemade guns promise to be a defining part of the Destiny 2 experience.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go back to the Explosive Personality grenade launcher template.
