I’m Addicted To Vampire Survivors And It’s Ruining My Life

I’m addicted to the itch.io game called Vampire Survivors.

Vampire Survivors is an endless sprite-based roguelike with Castlevania energy. The essence of the game is to move your character around a large square map while slowly approaching a growing number of enemies around him. Every few seconds, your character will make attacks. When you kill enemies, they may drop a small blue crystal. By picking up these crystals, you fill the level-up bar, and each new level gives you new offensive or defensive upgrades.

As with any roguelike,

the goal is to see how long you can survive before the mafia finally destroys you. What starts out as a slow wander around the field with a whip quickly turns into a frantic sprint to get ahead of the screen-filling crowd. There are almost no mental faculties required. It is fully controlled by the arrow keys. All you have to do is move your character around. No thoughts, just a devilish feeling. Every time you effortlessly make your way through a giant swarm of bats, you get another nice boost of healthy brain juices.

This simplicity, not having to think too much about what I’m doing,

Is a big part of why I can’t stop playing it, and it becomes a problem. It is too easy to open and tinker. You become his slave. The clock is falling, and you can’t explain your whereabouts. Vampire Survivors is so good that it takes up my free time and weekends. A healthy person will try to pass the time away from the games they talk about and think about all week. It is clear that I am not the right person because I feel that he is calling me even now. I could go outside. I could go for a walk or to the gym. Do everything literally not to look at the screen. I removed the bookmark in the vain hope that it might curb the cravings.

“One more run,” I mumble to myself as I type the URL from memory. “One more run, and then I’ll really go and live my life.”

A game free to play on the itch if you are feeling adventurous. You can get it on Steam and other platforms.

Just be careful. You, too, can become his slave.
