Ivermectin Did Not Reduce COVID Hospitalizations, Study Shows
March 21, 2022, According to a large Canadian study, the antiparasitic drug ivermectin does not decrease hospitalizations for people infected with COVID-19. Researchers at McMaster University in Ontario studied about 1,358 COVID patients at risk for severe illness due to diabetes or other conditions. Wall Street Magazine reported. Half of the patients existed given a course of ivermectin tablets for three days. And the other half were given a placebo. The researchers then tracked the patients to see if they had been hospitalized. “There was no indication that ivermectin was clinically useful,” said Edward Mills, one of the study’s lead investigators and professor of health sciences at McMaster University. Treatment of COVID-19
The FDA has not approved any form of ivermectin for the treatment of COVID-19. Several previous studies have shown ivermectin to be ineffective against COVID. A study published in JAMA Internal medicine said it does not help treat mild to moderate COVID-19.
“This is the first large prospective study that should help end ivermectin and not build confidence in it. Its use for treating Covid-19,” said Peter Hotez, MD, dean of Baylor College’s National School of Tropical Medicine. Medicine told Wall Street Magazine.
However, some doctors prescribe ivermectin as a treatment for COVID, and some vaccine advocates cite it as a helpful alternative.
That FDA warns people not to confuse ivermectin intended for humans with ivermectin designed for animals.
The Food and Drug Administration says it has approved pills to treat people with intestinal strongyloidiasis and onchocerciasis, conditions caused by parasitic worms. Topical medications for head lice and skin conditions like rosacea. Another form of ivermectin existed used to treat heartworm and parasites in horses and cows gives as a drop, injection, paste, or “soak.”
The FDA says that animal ivermectin products are dangerous to humans, and human ivermectin tablets are ineffective against COVID.
