Returnal Gets a Co-op Mode in Free Update Later This Month

Announced at today’s State of Play, Returnal will receive a new free update later this month that includes a new major challenge as well as the ability to play co-op with a friend. Update 3.0 from Returnal’s Ascension will release on March 22, 2022. And will include both an online co-op campaign and a new survival mode called The Tower of Sisyphus.

You can either host a co-op game or join another public fun or host or join a private match with a friend. According to¬†PlayStation Blog, the co-op mode will be available through the Chronos portal near the crash landing. Players will be linked to each other, so they don’t get too far apart and will be able to revive each other if they get knocked down. Game progress is tied to the host.

Tower of Sisyphus is an endless survival game mode where you try to get as high as possible, with challenges and enemies getting more challenging the higher you go. Each phase in the Tower culminates in a battle with Algos. Which becomes more complex, and the scores will be tracked on the leaderboard. The Tower also includes new narrative content.

Notably, The Tower of Sisyphus is not playable in co-op (and some story points are solo-only as well). But most of the game seems to be playable with a friend. A welcome help considering how difficult Return is. Maybe.

In our review, we liked Returnal’s gameplay weapon selection. And great difficulty and called it “an incredible roguelike and one of the best Housemarque games to date.”
