Super Mario 64 Guide Scanned In HD, Can Now Be Enjoyed By All

[ad_1I actually briefly written about this guide earlier on the site but in 1996 a book came out in Japan called Super Mario 64 Complete Clear Guide which was not just a strategy guide, but a collection of developer commentary and photos of custom 3D dioramas created specifically for the guide.

While it’s hardly a lost relic – you can find copies all over ebay for $200-$300 if you’re serious about reading it in the flesh – most of you reading this have never seen the book, and if you have, then only saw a few select pages. It just won’t work, so it’s nice to see that someone (CFC Dave Shevlin) took the time to scan and download the entire book at a very convenient 600 dpi resolution.

I can’t stress enough how amazing the dioramas are and how ingenious the idea of representing 3D space was – still a novelty back then! – on a two-dimensional page. Just look at this

Wonderful. And they just go on and on like that. The book is entirely in Japanese, but some translations were made; for example, this interview with Miyamoto, where he talks about how his child got the opportunity to play the game during development:

In truth, we did something with Mario 64 that we don’t usually do: we asked the kids to test the game. We had a row of 10 high school students and they played the King Bob-omb stage for half a day while we watched from behind.

In fact, my child was one of them… but seeing him try dozens of times, over and over again, to climb this insurmountable hill, I, as a parent, couldn’t help but think, “God, does this child have brains?” (laughs) Then we asked the kids what they thought of the game and they said it was fun and they would love to play it again.

So far, I think there has been an image with games that if you can’t win, it’s not fun and it’s not a good game, right? It’s a philosophy we have at Nintendo too, but I thought if the game is so much fun to play even if you don’t get anything, well, it should be fine. Before this game, I was very skeptical about something like this.
