FromSoftware has a habit of making games without pause. For nearly two weeks, we all thought Elden Ring was no different. There are even Maud on PC, which adds a pause button at the cost of having to play offline. Turns out FromSoftware snuck into one menu item that actually pauses the game at seemingly any time.
This option is hidden deep in the menu, and you may not notice that pressing it pauses the game. Here’s how to find it:
- Press start or ESC
- Enter any menu (e.g. “Equipment”)
- Click the back button to display the context options.
- Select Menu Explanation.
This option is meant to be a literal explanation of what the various Elden Ring menus do
But YouTuber iron pineapple shared on Twitter that using this option will pause the action. While this trick would be handy when you’re desperate to answer a phone during a boss fight or go to the toilet. It’s not a great replacement for a real pause button. First, getting to it requires an annoying four-step process that takes some practice to complete quickly. Then there is a natural event that FromSoftware will notice. This part as an exploit that ought to be selected in the following patch. If you want to wait and don’t care about Elden Ring’s online features, I really think this mod is the one for you. It’s fairly easy to install and can be used much faster by quickly pressing P. But you risk getting caught by FromSoftware’s supposed anti-cheat checks when you get back online.
I’m pretty used to finding a quiet place to stand before I leave, so I’ll probably use the menu trick when needed. Instead of rooting out this potential exploit, maybe all this interest in this feature will finally convince FromSoftware to stop being weird about the pause and just add it to the game. Desired.
